p.9 Rocking HorseSmall model of a rocking horse, designed by John Adams in the 1930s.
This is, of course, not Twintone or tableware, but shows the versatility and imagination of Adams in producing such a delightful piece. It was one of a series of animal models (see Hayward and Atterbury, p.90) and also appeared in a larger size. Some of the animal pieces have recently sold on eBay for well over £100. Length 3½in/9cm |
p.16 PurbeckEgg cup in Sapphire Blue, probably from the 1920s.
This would appear to come in the same series as the octagonal cream jug, also in Sapphire Blue. The egg cup, however, has a circular inside.
|
p.16 Cruet
Oval stand with wicker handle, no. 554, pattern WV.
The stand seen here could have been designed for two egg cups. The pieces are likely to date from the late 1920s as the paintress’s mark is for Gladys Jeffery (Carter), who was working 1926–30. See pots, right.
|
p.16 Salt and Pepper
Square-ended salt and pepper pots, OX pattern.
The salt and pepper pots seem to be the ones shown on p.84 of Hayward and Atterbury, and should be on a long stand with a mustard pot. Pots 2in/5.5cm tall.

p.16 Unglazed Egg Cup
Unglazed egg cup in ‘biscuit’, shown with a glazed egg cup in the same form.
The egg cup was dug out of a rubbish heap when the East Quay pottery at Poole was demolished. It suffered a further mishap when the postman dropped the parcel down the railings into my basement ‘area’. Truly an egg cup with 9 lives!

p.18 Embossed Dish
UPDATE:
The design for the embossed dish with the vine leaf design has recently been seen in a large fruit or salad bowl, rather than as in the individual size shown in the book.

p.18 Square Dish
Square dish from hors d’oeuvres set in Picotee pattern no.2.
Another example from the Picotee range. See also the backstamp (right).

p.18 Backstamp

pp.18,37 Flying Duck
Flying duck in sprayed Picotee glazes.
The length of this duck is 7-in. (17.5cm), it has an early 1950s mark and the number 812 2. In Hayward and Atterbury (p.74) an old pattern sheet from the 1930s is shown, referring to only two ducks, no.1 and no.2, being 5½-in and 9-in (14cm, 23cm), so this may be a later afterthought. However, on p.75 three ducks are shown with the largest being 11¾-in (30cm), so four sizes were actually made.

p.18 Part Set C90
Part of a pre-war Streamline coffee set in Sunshine and Seagull (C90).
This is one of the rarest of the pre-war colour schemes and was bought from the United States.
|
p.72 Tea Cup
Streamline tea cup with Leaf design on Celadon.
Unusually, this cup has a wide white band round the top. A smaller version of the motif is repeated on the reverse and on the saucer.
|
p.72 Coffee Cup
Pink flower pattern on Ivory background on a Streamline coffee cup.
This seems to be a rare pattern (marked NT) with a mark from early 1950s.
|
p.72 Coffee Cup
Streamline coffee cup with a yacht design on Celadon, pattern NZ, and with a mark from early 1950s.
There was no saucer with this cup, but it would probably have had a motif of the wave pattern, which appears on the reverse. Some coffee pots and plates have also been seen.
